A comprehensive dental exam is the foundation of your oral health. It is far more than a quick look at your teeth. It is a systematic, detailed evaluation of everything happening in your mouth, from the integrity of each tooth surface to the health of your gum tissue, the alignment of your bite, the condition of your jaw joints, and the appearance of your oral soft tissues. Done thoroughly and at regular intervals, a comprehensive exam is how serious problems are caught before they become serious, and how your dentist builds the knowledge of your mouth necessary to notice meaningful changes over time.

At Alber Dental Studio, every exam is performed personally by Dr. Marc Alber, who brings over 26 years of diagnostic experience to every patient he sees. We are a preventive-focused practice, which means exams are never rushed, findings are always explained, and every recommendation is grounded in what is genuinely best for your long-term oral health.

What a Comprehensive Exam Covers

Our comprehensive exams evaluate every component of your oral health in sequence. Dr. Alber begins with a review of your medical and dental history, including any medications that can affect oral tissues, saliva flow, or bleeding risk. He then examines each tooth individually for decay, cracks, wear patterns, and structural integrity. Periodontal evaluation follows, measuring pocket depths around each tooth and assessing gum tissue color, texture, and attachment levels to detect any signs of active disease.

Bite and jaw evaluation includes assessment of how your teeth come together, whether there is evidence of grinding or clenching, and the function and comfort of your temporomandibular joints. We also conduct a visual oral cancer screening of all soft tissues, including the tongue, floor of the mouth, palate, cheeks, and throat. Digital X-rays are reviewed for interproximal decay, bone levels, root health, and any changes from prior films. At the end of every exam, Dr. Alber reviews his findings with you directly, explains any areas of concern, and presents treatment options where applicable with honest context about urgency and alternatives. Our advanced diagnostic technology supports every step of this process.

New patients receive an extended new patient exam that also includes full-mouth X-rays and a photographic record of your teeth and gums. This gives us a complete baseline from your first visit and allows us to track changes accurately over time. Returning patients receive periodic X-rays at intervals based on their individual risk level rather than a rigid schedule. Our goal is always to image what needs to be imaged and no more.

What We Evaluate
Teeth and restorations for decay, cracks, and wear
Gum tissue and bone levels for signs of periodontal disease
Bite alignment, jaw joints, and signs of bruxism
Soft tissues and oral cavity for cancer screening
X-rays for issues not visible to the naked eye
Medical history and systemic health factors that affect oral health

Why Exam Thoroughness Matters

The difference between a thorough exam and a perfunctory one is the difference between catching a small crack before it fractures and discovering a fractured tooth that now needs a crown or extraction. It is the difference between identifying early-stage gum disease when simple treatment can reverse it and diagnosing advanced periodontitis that requires months of intensive therapy. The exam is not a formality. It is the single most important diagnostic encounter in your dental care, and its quality directly determines the quality of every treatment decision that follows.

At Alber Dental Studio, Dr. Alber does not delegate the exam to a hygienist or rush through it between patients. He sits down, reviews your record, and evaluates you personally at every visit. That consistency over years is what makes his assessments meaningful. He knows what your teeth looked like two years ago and five years ago, and that longitudinal knowledge is irreplaceable. For patients new to our practice, we also welcome any X-rays or records from previous providers so we can build on existing history rather than starting from scratch. You can also learn more about our approach to oral cancer screenings and gum disease treatment, both of which begin with findings from the comprehensive exam.

Exams and cleanings are covered in whole or in part by most dental insurance plans. We also offer 0% financing through CareCredit, Cherry, and Altheon, and we accept HSA and FSA funds. Visit our financing page for details.

What to Expect

The Exam Process at Alber Dental Studio

Most comprehensive exam appointments follow a consistent sequence. Here is what to expect from check-in through the end of your visit.

Dr. Alber will explain all your options clearly and recommend only what your situation actually calls for.

What to Expect

What to Expect at Your Visit

1

Health History & Review

Dr. Alber reviews your health history, takes X-rays where indicated, and performs a thorough clinical exam. Any changes since your last visit are noted and factored into your care plan. New patients receive a comprehensive baseline evaluation before any treatment is discussed.

2

Clinical Exam & X-Rays

Based on the clinical findings, Dr. Alber presents a clear assessment of what he sees and what it means. Every recommendation comes with a clinical rationale. Treatment options are explained in plain language so you can make an informed decision without pressure.

3

Comprehensive Exam vs. Basic Checkup

When treatment is indicated, it is performed with precision and care. When nothing active is needed, you leave with a clean baseline and a clear plan for your next visit. Either way, you know exactly where you stand.

4

Findings & Your Care Plan

Before you leave, we schedule your next appointment based on your recommended interval — six months for most patients, more frequently if your periodontal status warrants it. Consistency is what preventive care is built on.

Questions About Your Care

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I have a comprehensive exam?
For most adults, every six months. Patients with elevated risk factors, such as a history of gum disease, frequent cavities, dry mouth from medications, or systemic conditions like diabetes, may benefit from quarterly exams. Dr. Alber will recommend the right interval for your specific situation and adjust it as your oral health changes over time.
A new patient exam is an extended version of our standard comprehensive exam. In addition to the full clinical evaluation, we take a complete set of X-rays, a photographic record, and a detailed health history. Dr. Alber spends extra time in conversation during new patient appointments to understand your concerns, goals, and past dental experiences before beginning any clinical assessment.
Yes. Digital X-rays are an essential part of a thorough dental exam because they reveal decay between teeth, bone changes around roots, infections, and other issues that are completely invisible during a visual examination. Many serious dental problems produce no symptoms until they are well advanced, and X-rays are the primary way to find them early. We use digital X-rays, which significantly reduce radiation exposure compared to older film systems.
Yes. A visual oral cancer screening is included at every comprehensive exam. Dr. Alber examines all soft tissues, including the tongue, floor of the mouth, palate, cheeks, and throat, for any abnormal changes in color, texture, or shape. Early detection is the most important factor in oral cancer outcomes, and a brief, painless screening at every visit is the most reliable way to catch anything that warrants closer attention.
Yes. We welcome any X-rays or records from prior providers and will incorporate them into your record at Alber Dental Studio. Having previous X-rays allows Dr. Alber to compare your current findings against historical data, which provides much richer diagnostic insight than starting completely fresh. Please ask your previous provider to send records ahead of your first appointment.
Exams and cleanings are covered in whole or in part by most dental insurance plans. As a fee-for-service practice, we do not participate in insurance networks, but most plans provide out-of-network benefits and many patients receive partial reimbursement directly from their carrier. We provide the documentation needed for you to submit claims. Financing through CareCredit, Cherry, and Altheon is also available.
