Got too much candy? A lot of us do right after Halloween! As you know, eating too much candy isn’t good for your teeth – or the rest of you either. Fortunately, it’s not too tough to find some good uses for these excess treats.

First, let us remind you of the candies that are especially bad for your family’s smiles – as well as some better options. It’s best to avoid sticky and sour candies. Sticky treats like taffy cling to teeth and are difficult to remove. So they are more likely to cause cavities than many other treats. Sour candies have especially high amounts of sugar and acid, and both of these can do a real number on teeth.

Chocolate is typically a good choice. It melts quickly and washes away from your teeth before doing much damage. It also tends to have at least some nutritional value – whereas other candies do not.

When you sort through candy to eliminate some, focus on getting rid of the more harmful stuff. Watch this short video for some good ideas on what to do with it. We’d add that you can take it to your workplace and put it in the breakroom or leave some on your porch with a note inviting delivery persons to help themselves. If you’ll be traveling for the holidays, save some to give to flight attendants as a thank-you.

Whether or not you tend to eat too much candy, the best way to keep your teeth in great shape is to see us every six months for an exam and cleaning.
